Beach EV Rentals & the Hawaii State Department of Transportation reminds parents and those responsible for transporting young children to heed the new child passenger restraint law.

What parents and others transporting keiki in Hawaii need to know about ACT 122. Act 122 amends requirements for child passenger restraint by requiring rear-facing child safety seats for children less than two years of age, increases the age through which a child must use a child passenger restraint or booster seat to 10 years old, and raises fines for certain violations.

Does My Child (Keiki) Require a Booster Seat?

If the child is 7 years or older, but less than 10 years of age, the person operating the vehicle shall be exempt from restraining the child in a child passenger restraint system with harness or booster seat that meets federal motor vehicle safety standards at the time of manufacture if the child is correctly restrained by a lap and shoulder seat assembly; provided the child is over 4 feet 9 inches in height.

An electronic copy of the new law that took effect on June 27, 2022, can be found at https://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/session2022/bills/GM1223_.PDF

How Old Must You Be to Ride in an Beach EV Street Legal LSV?

If law requires your child to ride in a booster seat or child passenger restraint system, then then your child is not authorized to ride as a passenger in our vehicles.

Please abide by the laws. Beach EV Rentals rents registered vehicles to the public and operates under Maui County vehicle laws. Any violations will terminate your contract immediately and all fines are to be payable by the renter.

Vacations are supposed to be time to unwind, recharge your batteries, and spend quality time with loved ones. On Maui, there are plenty of activities to help get you on island time. Whether you choose beaching, snorkeling, hiking, going out to eat, and/or watching a sunset, you can’t go wrong. But, if you are like many visitors to Maui, and not familiar with the stress of island traffic and tight parking spaces at nearly every shopping center and/or beach park, we’re here to answer your questions and guide you. Is there a better option than renting a car on Maui? Is there a more fun, clean, and economical way?  Is there a car rental alternative when vacationing on Maui?

The answer is yes! You can do a trip to the Valley Isle without a Maui car rental. For a carefree, fun, and easy to explore Maui, try these proven alternatives to car rental Maui, Hawaii.

Street Legal, Electric Golf Carts – Beat Inflation by Saving Money at the Pump

Did you know that you can rent a street legal golf cart on Maui? Yes, now you can take your vacation to the next level of fun and ease with all electric golf carts. Beach EV’s 4 and 6 seat golf carts rent by the day or week. They are registered and permitted to drive on all roads with 35 mph and under posted. This means you can cruise Wailea-Makena, Kihei, Lahaina, Launiupoko, as well as north Kaanapali to Kapalua. With a foldable backseat, you can haul your cooler, beach chairs, groceries, umbrella, and more to and from the beach, farmer’s market, or shopping trip.

Plus, you don’t have to worry about filling up the gas tank (almost $6 a gallon – Ouch!). All you need is a 110 outlet with the provided extension cord. This is ideal for family reunions, girlfriend getaways, and celebrating x, y, or z. Read why other travelers are choosing electric golf carts on Maui.

Book with Tour Operators – Haleakala National Park and Road to Hana

Haleakala-National-Park-Maui-Sunset

Although sunrise or sunset at the summit of Haleakala National Park and the world renowned Road to Hana are spectacular trips, they are extremely exhausting. The Road to Hana is a six-hour round trip without many stops from the OGG airport. You must add more time to get from West or South Maui locations like Kihei, Wailea, Lahaina, or Kapalua. Likewise Haleakala National Park is 10,000 feet up a windy road that also starts close to the OGG airport. It takes a couple of hours to drive up and down with sunrise at 5-6 am and sunset from 5:30-7:00pm (pictured above). Most of the drive will be in the dark and the summit very chilly. Bring blankets and layers. With that being said, why not book a tour to drive you and your family. You can sit back and relax taking in the beauty of the waterfalls, lush vegetation, and/or the endangered nenes in the National Park. Some of the best tour operators to choose from are Hawaii Tours, Skyline Tours, and Temptation Tours.

Use a Rideshare App

If you haven’t heard of Uber or Lift, we would be worried about you. As you may know, they have been and are the most widely used rideshare apps in the United States if not the world. And, they have been wildly successful here. However, Maui offers you another option to get you from your accommodations to dinner and back with the locally operated Holoholo rideshare. You may even catch an epic sunset shot like above while you wait for your ride!

Choose an Convenient Location – West Maui, South Maui, & Paia

maui-kanaapail-beach-resort

One of the smartest ways to avoid a car rental in Maui is to select a convenient location – one that has your favorite places close by and needs no car/vehicle to get you the essentials. Some of the best locations from beaches and shopping to entertainment and dining are in Wailea, Kihei, Lahaina, Kaanapali (shown above), Kapalua, and Paia. You can’t go wrong. Walk, bike, shuffle, or cruise a golf cart to enjoy Maui from an urban-island perspective.

Maui’s Public Bus and Shuttles

alternatives-to-car-rentals-maui

In Hawaii and Maui specifically, we are trying to make our transportation as green as possible. That can be done with electric vehicles, electric golf carts, and mass transit. Maui does have a very nice bus system, but you need to be patient. The routes are not as frequent as in New York, Boston, or Chicago. Plus, they start fairly early in the morning, but don’t go late into the evening. You can get from Wailea and Kihei to the Aquarium and switch routes to go into Lahaina or Wailuku. Just be aware of the schedule which you can view online.

So, the Valley Isle can be done in stellar vacation style without a car rental Maui. These alternatives to car rental Maui should get you and your family around easy, quickly, and in an eco-friendly way. Plus, you aren’t paying for it at the gas pump (more money for luaus, ziplining, and shave ice).

Whether you are coming to Maui for a family vacation, a couple’s getaway, a solo adventure, or a special event, you want to maximize your time on the island. So, leave your calendar, to-do lists, and worries at home or the office. For an unforgettable, carefree vacation on the Valley Isle, just follow our recommendations of the best things to do on Maui Hawaii.

Head to the Beach

The Aloha State is famous for its tropical beaches and warm waters year round. Specifically Maui has some of the best. A local and visitor favorite on the South side is Big Beach (featured image above). As the name implies, this is a big, long sandy beach, which is part of Makena State Park and is popular with local boogie boarders. For those that are interested in getting rid of tan lines, just a short walk from Big Beach is Little Beach. However, you can’t go wrong with other South side hotspots of Wailea Beach or Kihei’s Kam 1, 2, or 3 beach parks.

On the West side of Maui, Launiupoko Beach is ideal for a picnic, swim, and/or surf. On the other side of Lahaina is Baby Beach, which is a perfect spot for families with smaller kiddos. The resort area of Kaanapali has calm beaches, restaurants, shopping, and its famous jumping spot, Black Rock; however, the area is always popular and surrounded by resorts. Be prepared for crowds. And another winning beach is DT Fleming Beach Park (pictured above). It has lifeguards and is a safe beach for bodyboarding and swimming. In fact, from the beach, you can take a short coastal walk on the Kapalua Trail.
Be aware that parking is limited on Maui, especially at popular beach parks, restaurants, and more. An ideal alternative to renting a car in Maui is renting a golf cart. Check out why other savvy travelers are choosing to rent a street legal golf cart on Maui.

Swim with Tropical Fish and Sea Turtles

Maui’s surrounding waters are home to an abundance of marine life. Most swimmers, snorkelers and divers are mesmerized by the many yellow tang, trumpetfish, black triggerfish and Hawaii’s state fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa (a mouthful for sure). However, our green sea turtles (honu) are the showstoppers. Snorkeling with them is a life-changing experience (look but no touch).

The best spots for snorkeling with turtles and tropical fish near Kihei and Wailea are Makena Landing and Turtle Town. If you are looking to snorkel in West Maui, your best bet is Honolua Bay, which is a marine sanctuary as well as a protected cove.

Surf Lessons

You only live once, right? That’s why when in Maui, you should take a surf lesson. Whether you choose to take a private lesson or a group lesson, most surf instructors and companies choose locations that are ideal for beginners. The Cove in Kihei is one of the best and safest South side surfing spots. On the West side, Guardrails and Lahaina Breakwall are common areas to take surf lessons for all levels.

Witness a Maui Sunset

best-things-to-do-on-maui-hawaii-sunsets

A perfect finale to any great day in Maui is a sunset. We highly recommend packing a couple of chairs or a blanket and a cooler to enjoy Mother Nature’s masterpiece unfold. The best and most colorful sunset views from South and West Maui include the neighboring islands of Kahoolawe, Lanai, and Molokai. Our top three sunset viewing spots on the island are Keawakapu Beach in Wailea (shown above), Front Street in Lahaina, and Kapalua.

Top Things to Do on Maui – Savor the Flavors of Hawaii

With all the fun in the sun, don’t forget to refuel and keep hydrated! And, why not support local restaurants and the aina (the land)? Our tasty tips: In Lahaina, for breakfast it’s Westside Bagel & Bakery. Then throughout the day, try the fish tacos at Cool Cat Cafe (yeah, the fish tacos), the Ahi Bruschetta at Honu or the miso salmon at Star Noodle. Sample a poke bowl at Miso Phat in Kahana or Kihei. Have to please everyone?  Go with pizza from Manoli’s Pizza Company in Wailea or Lahaina Pizza Company. For those that are curious about local craft beers and libations, head over to Maui Brewing (two locations Kihei and Kahana), Kohola Brewery or Waikiki Brewing Company on the Westside.
